Investment Needed, Dedication Opportunities at Masbia of Flatbush

Masbia of Flatbush, which has served millions of pounds of food to a countless number of clients, is about to undergo a revitalization in order to continue serving clients with dignity. While other Masbia facilities have had to relocate after the lease was up, our Flatbush site will continue to operate in the same space. New investments and renovation will be completed with minimum disruption to our ongoing operation.

Please partner with us as we continue our efforts to best serve our clients with dignity at our Flatbush location. As a grassroots effort, we rely on fundraising to cover our expenses and I ask you to help us stabilize our organization with a long lasting sponsorship that will be commemorated on the dedication wall at our facility. Numerous opportunities are available at a variety of levels as described in full detail below. Each dedication has an option for a conventional donation, installment program or via crowdfunding platform, allowing you to get a prominent dedication in honor of a loved by one by involving friends and family to pool contributions together. For more information please contact Masbia's executive director, Alexander Rapaport at 718-972-4446 x201 or email to [email protected]

Location Naming Rights - “Shem Habinyan” - $360,000

In addition to having your chosen name prominently displayed on the dedication wall, you will secure naming rights to appear in large letters on the outside of the facility, located near the main intersection of Coney Island Avenue and Avenue J in the heart of Flatbush. All public notices such as flyers, posters, and ads regarding this Masbia location will carry your chosen name.

Grand Entrance Naming – “Pesach HaOhel” - $180,000

In addition to earning a prominent spot on the dedication wall, you will acquire the naming rights to the main entrance with your chosen name to appear in large letters on the outside storefront, located near the main intersection of Coney Island Avenue and Avenue J in the heart of Flatbush. The title of this dedication pays homage to our patriarch Abraham who stood at the entrance of his tent when he invited the three angels to be his guests. Genesis (18:1).

Dining Room - "Mekarve Ahaneise" - $100,000

In addition to receiving a prominent spot on the dedication wall, a plaque with your chosen name will appear in the dining room. The Talmud in Kesubos (67:2) makes it clear that providing ready-to-eat food is the highest form of charity, because the satisfaction of the hungry person is immediate. At Masbia, our hot dinner program does exactly that, feeding hungry men, women and children hot, nutritious ready-to-eat meals. Masbia has won national accolades for its ability to serve its clients with incredibly dignity and was described by People Magazine as "a restaurant without a cash register."

Pantry Hall – “Cheder Chalukat Motzarei Mazon” – $100,000

In addition to a prominent spot on the dedication wall, a plaque will appear prominently in the pantry hall. Our Queens pantry program is by far the most utilized service of our entire network, with lines stretching out the door and down the street. Having a 1,500 sq/ft room dedicated to this service only will enable us to not only offer a system where clients can choose the foods they want, but also provides them a dignified and private indoor space to wait.

Kitchen – “Mitbach” – $100,000

Your dedication will be prominently displayed on both the dedication wall and in Masbia’s flagship kitchen which prepares food for all of the locations. Before the destruction of the Second Temple during the most pivotal hunger in Jewish history, the three richest Jews of that time got together to offer sustenance to all of Jerusalem, what would have been the largest food distribution ever, but the Talmud actually celebrates the donation of firewood above the food itself. The dedication of the kitchen, where raw ingredients are transformed into food, will give the sponsor the place of the Talmudic “firewood” in Masbia.

Repository – “Cheder Malei Tov” – $100,000

In addition to receiving a prominent spot on the dedication wall, a plaque with your chosen name will appear in the repository, the place where our volunteers spend most of their time. Having sizable inventory space allows us to buy and receive donations in bulk and gives us the ability to venture into food rescue. On any given day, the inventory has the capacity to hold close to 100,000 pounds of food and to dispense over 30,000 pounds of food per week, which allows us to be classified as a “food bank.”

Climate Control – “Ruach HaMakom Noche” – $36,000

Having proper climate control in our facility allows us to treat our guests with the utmost dignity, providing them with relief during the scorching summer months and a welcome escape from the bone crushing cold of winter. The half hour that our guests spend with us enjoying a nutritious meal may very well be the only time that they spend during the day enjoying a respite from extreme temperatures. This dedication is titled “Ruach Hamkom Noche,” a play on the words of Ethics of our Fathers (3:10).

Hot Food Display Counter – “L’ais Tachin Matbaiach” – $25,000

This dedication, based on the words of the Chanukah song Maoz Tzur, will be inscribed on the serving showcase where food cooked in the rear kitchen is kept warm, ready to be served to guests, restaurant style, by our attentive wait staff. The serving showcase will be a prominent fixture in our dining area and will contain both counterspace and hot food warmers.

Vessel Containing Blessings – “Kli Machzik Bracha” – $25,000

This dedication, which also includes the dishwashing area, alludes to the final verse of the Mishnah Uktzin (3:12) which describes peace as the only vessel capable of containing blessing. In order to elevate our dining experience and create a greater sense of dignity for our guests, we will be making the switch to elegant, washable dinnerware at this location, a move that will require a large investment in approximately 500 sets of cups, silverware and plates.

Seated at Your Table – “Ta’aroch Lefanei Shulchan” – $18,000 (x12)

This great opportunity, “Ta’aroch Lefanai Shulchan,” is based on a phrase in the well known 23rd Psalm and will give twelve donors the opportunity to literally host guests at their own table at our facility. The blessing of a table, which brings with it both longevity and atonement, is mentioned several times in the Talmud, imbuing this sponsorship with special meaning as multiple guests enjoy meals throughout the day. A ceremonial contract will be provided to each sponsor, formalizing the table as theirs for the lifetime of the facility.

Lighting – “Ora V’simcha” – $12,000

This sponsorship, which takes its name from the book of Esther (8:16), addresses lighting issues that have plagued our Flatbush location for years, a problem that can easily be rectified during the renovation process with the installation of cost effective, practical and easy to maintain lighting. The Talmud in Yuma (84:2) states that a blind person eats but is never fully satiated, further reinforcing the importance of proper lighting as part of a fulfilling meal.

Flooring – “Ritspas Bahat Vasheish” – $12,000

This dedication opportunity references the book of Esther (1:6) which describes the magnificent flooring at the great feast of Achashverosh, underscoring that even centuries ago, flooring was considered to be an important element of a good meal. Our floors, which proudly bear witness to thousands of meals, endless heavy duty equipment and countless feet, are showing signs of wear and tear. By installing new flooring, we hope to enhance the ambiance of our dining area, making it even more welcoming to our guests.

Ritual Hand Washing Sink – “Hakiyor” – $5,000

The netilas-yadayim sink, named for the kiyor, the Temple’s hand washing sink, will be designated for guests’ ritual pre-meal hand washing, with the dedication displayed above the sink. Replacing our existing sink, which is worn out and in poor condition, and renovating the surrounding area will be another way to add a greater level of dignity to our guests’ dining experience. In addition to receiving a prominent spot on the dedication wall, your dedication will be displayed in sink area.

In addition to providing clients with much needed items in the most dignified way possible, the highest form of charity, the food choice pantry is reminiscent of the mon which fell from the heavens, where every person was able to choose the taste that most appealed to them.

Pantry Furniture & Storage “Kavod HaBriyos” – $25,000

This dedication of furniture and space for our client choice pantry is called “Kavod HaBriyos” because it allows us to treat those who come to us with the highest level of dignity. Our pantry will actually have three different areas: freestanding shelves to house inventory, a place where clients can choose their package items comfortably and a waiting area with tables and chairs, sparing clients the embarrassment of having to stand on line while their items are prepared.

Client Choice Pantry Tablets, Computers, & Printers “LashoveChebones” – $18,000

While we are in the business of feeding the hungry, even an enterprise like ours involves technology in order to take down basic information and to manage the client choice pantry efficiently and respectfully. This dedication will appear on every device including computers, tablets and printers.

Double Stacked Convection Oven with Shabbos Mode “TanurimGdolim” – $10,000 (x2)

Industrial Floor Unit Mixer, Blender & Immersion Blender “Izar Konegdo” – $10,000

Given the number of meals that we serve and the amount of food we prepare, having our own industrial kitchen appliances is a cost saving measure that lets us process massive quantities of food.
